Legend has it that tea was discovered by divine chance in 2737 B.C.—when leaves from a camellia sinensis plant blew into Chinese emperor Shen-Nong's pot of boiling water.
Over the ensuing centuries, tea wove its way deeply into Chinese culture. Elaborate ceremonies were formed around the serving and drinking of tea—and China built up a lucrative tea trade. When tea seeds finally found their way past Chinese borders, the cultivation of tea spread swiftly across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, creating a rich tapestry of tastes, preparation methods, and traditions the world over.
Tea is already the world's most-consumed beverage, second only to water, and its popularity is on the rise around the world. With gourmet tea leading the way, more and more people are discovering the magic of tea.
