Everything Old is New Again

The Covid pandemic has helped many people re-evaluate their needs and re-focus on the things that are most important to them.

Families are enjoying the pleasure of cooking together, playing games, helping with schoolwork and relaxing together without the pressure of high-speed life.

Home delivery has re-emerged in every area of shopping.

I remember as a child that home delivery was taken for granted. Sitting in my grandmother’s kitchen, the grocer would knock on the back door and appear, notebook and pencil in hand, in his signature white apron. He would pass the time of day, take her grocery order and return the next day with her order. Fruit and vegetables, meat and other essentials were all brought to the door.

The daily milk delivery did not die out until the mid-1980’s. And of course, the ever-present ice-cream van, bell ringing, with the children chasing it down the street.

These were great services.

Then we were all seduced by the supermarket, where shoppers could wander the aisles, browsing the mountains of choice before taking your trolley to the checkout, waiting patiently in line for your turn, often packing your own bags, then packing it all in the car boot, driving home and unpacking it all again.

Nobody gave much thought to the fact that we replaced service with self-service, taking up our free time and resources.

But that has been changing for a while, with more and more time-poor people (especially women), moving to the convenience of online shopping and home delivery. But the self-isolation necessitated by the virus has really accelerated the move to online shopping and home-delivery.

People are taking much more pleasure in simpler things. We have more time and less stress - thinks that are important to our physical and mental health and well being.

Let's not forget this lesson and value our time, our relaxation and great service, including home delivery.

A big hug, 'til next time,

Cheryl
